Remembering Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hameed Siddiqi —
Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hameed Siddiqi was born on 12th July 1902 in UP, graduated from KGMC (King George Medical College) Lucknow in 1928, got distinction in most of the subjects. He did his MS from Lucknow university in 1930, the first graduate to recieve the MS from that university, FRCS and DLO from England in 1932 and was awarded gold medal by the Academy of Sciences of India in 1936. He was appointed as the Principal in his collage 1938-39. Just before partition he was posted to west Punjab and started as Inspector General of Civil hospitals of Punjab, then professor of operative surgery at KEMC Lahore and MS Mayo hospital, Lahore, for some time.
He shifted to Karachi in 1953 as professor of surgery in Dow Medical Collage and retired in 1975. He died on 27th Aug 1976, most probably due to acute bleeding from DU in Lahore while on his way to Islamabad for some teaching assignment. He left behind a talented son surgeon Badar Saddiqui a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery in Pakistan and Dr. Bilqees Afzal, Professor of Anatomy besides other siblings. Professor Saddiqui was a brilliant teacher, a strict administrator, a clean surgeon and a great eloquent speaker. He published five volumes of Atlas of Anatomy and operative surgery, all in India. He set up museums of anatomy and surgery in Lucknow, Lahore (KEMC) and Collage of Physician and Surgeons of Pakistan in Karachi. He had been a member of Bhore Commission of Medical Education India 1946, member secretary of all India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi 1947, member of syndicate Punjab University, Vice president of PM & DC, medical Advisor to Thal Development authority and project director PIMS Islamabad.
His elder brother Muhammad Abdul Majeed Siddiqi, was a professor of zoology.
