SURGEON M.R. Shirazi: 1960-70’s: Was a Thoracic Surgeon and was a Professor at Civil Hospital Karachi and a visiting surgeon at the Ojha Sanatorium. Dr. Iqbal Yaad would refer him the ugh advanced TB patients who he first tried to treat with medicines. If they would not respond and develop complications such as a lung abscess or large collections of fluid in the chest cavity it was time to call in Surgeon Shirazi. He was one of the few such specialists. Surgeon Shirazi would then operate on them and remove portions of the lung containing infected material. Before the drugs for TB were invented one of the treatments of TB involved collapsing the lung with foam like material to give it rest (plumbage); TB remains a big public health problem in Pakistan. People from up country who came to Karachi would easily acquire it since they had little resistance to it. Surgeon Shirazi is a silent hero of Karachi. When he lectured us in 1975 he had a bigger beard. As per Dr. Salman Faridi, his son Hathif Shirazi is a surgeon in UK and daughter Bushra Shirazi is a surgeon at SIUT. (AHK October 20 2018);
Aziz Dhedhi Surgeon Shirazi Sahib was a very fine person and a bold Surgeon. He was very kind at heart. I had the privilege of working with him as his senior house officer and assistant. He used to take me with him in his old Mercedes car to Ojha Sanitorium. We used to spend full day there operating. May Allah s w t give him a high place in Jannah. Aameen
