CIVIL HOSPITAL KARACHI NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT PROJECT
After a lot of thought and discussions we narrowed down the choices and adopted the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit project. After meeting with the staff we encountered numerous issues which became apparent in the discussions. The main issues discussed were:
1. Site: proposed site is the veranda of the present facilities which house a Diarrhoea Unit at present.A new unit is being constructed for the diarrhea unit which will hopefully vacate the present premises. This area is an open space in the veranda (see pictures) of the old Hostel 4. It will need refurbishment but minimal structural changes.
2. Requirment of the units were being proposed by a Neonatologist from Agha Khan (who has been trained in USA). Space and equipments requirments being worked.
3. Equipment list was created.
4.Running issues discussed. This unit will run as an independent unit under the Peds umbrella but not in direct control of the wards.Presently two of our class fellows (Murtaza and Femhina) are working
5. Extra training fro the nurses and physicans.
6. Recruitment and retention issues.
7.Equipment maintainence issues were discussed.
8. Running and maintainence expenditure to be catered for by creating an endowment fund for the project. This will be funded by part of the inital fund collected and part on an ongoing basis.
9.. Nurses retention to be enhanced by extra funds.
10. Director of the unit to be created by extra funds .
